How to comment

  1. Open the application on the council's website using the button on its card.
  2. Use the comment option on that page, or email the case officer and quote the reference.
  3. Say what you object to and why. Be specific, and write in your own words.
  4. Send it before the closing date. Late comments are often still read until the decision is made, so do not give up if you are late.
  5. Comments can be published. Leave out anything you do not want others to read.

What the council can take into account

  • Design, size and appearance
  • Heritage: the conservation area and listed buildings
  • Highway safety, traffic and parking
  • Overlooking, loss of privacy or light
  • Noise and disturbance
  • Drainage and flood risk
  • Trees, hedges and wildlife
  • Conflict with the local plan

What it cannot

  • Loss of a private view
  • Effect on property values
  • Who the applicant is
  • Competition with other businesses

The council has to weigh the planning reasons for and against. Many individual comments on the same real planning point carry more weight than one standard letter repeated.
